Climate change and its impacts are now undeniable: a higher average temperature, rising sea levels, an increase in the number of storms, droughts and floods, the exodus of climate refugees… Now is the time for effective actions at global level to limit climate change and enable our societies to adapt to its consequences.

Leaders from the whole world will have to reach a new climate agreement during the December 2009 Copenhagen Summit. It is of the utmost importance that this agreement should set ambitious targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, backed with necessary means to ensure their success: our future depends on it!

Nuclear energy will not prevent climate change!

Under the current Kyoto Protocol and its main mechanisms*, nuclear energy is rightly excluded from the possible solutions available to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. At the Copenhagen summit, nuclear power will be at the heart of the negotiations. In collaboration with certain countries, the nuclear industry is pushing for this dangerous and polluting technology to be included in the next climate agreement as a “clean” technology.

This would allow some industrialised countries to avoid reducing part of the emissions produced on their territory, without questioning the way they produce and consume, whilst exporting an expensive, inefficient and risky technology. Such a disingenuous strategy would encourage the global expansion of the nuclear industry, with its associated risks, and would mean losing the fight against climate change.

Join us in challenging the political leaders gathered in Copenhagen: Nuclear energy must not be used as a tool to fight climate change and be given the advantage of large public investments... at the expense of the real solutions!

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen!

During the Copenhagen Summit, you will be responsible for reaching a new international climate agreement. It is of the utmost importance that this agreement should set ambitious targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and should define appropriate solutions to limit climate change and to enable our communities to adapt to its impacts.

Therefore, I ask you to reject nuclear energy as a -clean- technology, and to oppose its inclusion in the mechanisms to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, for the following reasons:

Nuclear power is a totally inappropriate solution for the reduction of those emissions: its contribution can only be very small, would come too late and be negligible compared to the contribution from energy saving and renewable energies. Moreover, nuclear power is very expensive and deprives the real solutions from funding. Choosing the nuclear option will thus mean losing the fight against climate change.

Nuclear energy is a dangerous and polluting technology. The risk of major accidents is real and increases with the number of reactors. Radioactivity poses a serious threat to health, and there is no solution to the problem of nuclear waste management.

Furthermore, the ANEF-Resolution (Antinuclear European Forum), which demands the introduction of a tax on nuclear power in the EU to prevent windfall profits for the dirty form of energy that nuclear power is from trade in emission certificates, is of great importance. The level of tax should be comparable with the costs of emission certificates necessary for a lignite power station of the same capacity. ANEF-Resolution is published on www.anef.info.

You owe it to all of us to advocate the real solutions for climate change!
